The digital telecommunications network planned for East Germany will use Model 30-3 pulse code modulation analogue-to-digital converters developed by VEB Nachrichtenelek – tronikwerk Greifswald in collaboration with Siemens AG. According to Computerwoche, 800 of the new transmission systems will have been manufactured in East Germany by the end of the year to expand the existing telephone network. According to Siemens, the introduction of pulse code modulation systems will make facsimile and data transmission possible, and improve telephone reception. The plans call for installation of digital exchanges and an overlay network with 92,000 lines as a first step. Fibre optic technology is on the agenda for long-distance lines. As part of its increasing involvement in Greifswald, Siemens is investing the equivalent of almost $13m to bring production up to modern standards. The projects are expected to lead to a joint venture and establishment of a service organisation to take over installation, implementation and maintenance of the digital exchanges.
