Where do old facsimile machines go to die? No, not to Russia or Africa if the Deutsche Bundespost Telekom and friends have any say in it. According to Reuter, the German phone company is an equal 25% shareholder with Siemens AG, Preussag AG and Alcatel SEL AG in Electrocycling-Anlagen GmbH, a new company based in Goslar, formed to recycle obsolete electronic products such as telephones, facsimile and answering machines. Capitalised at $16.5m, the operating company, Electrocycling GmbH, will initially employ 100 people, reprocessing around 12,000 tonnes of dead equipment a year, rising to 21,000 tonnes at full capacity.
