Through the agreement, Kindred Healthcare will install Siemens SOMATOM Emotion Duo computed tomography (CT) systems in its network of long-term acute care hospitals for medically complex patients, including patients on mechanical ventilators.

The company said it plans to add CT imaging to improve patient care by eliminating the resource intensive process of transporting patients to separate centers for CT studies.

The partnership began two years ago during which time the companies collaborated on all aspects of the project. A cross-organizational team has also been assembled to plan and monitor the project. In addition, Siemens hosted online conferences to provide an open forum for the 12 individual Kindred Hospitals to learn about Siemens CT technology, training and installation.

Patients, physicians and our hospital management will all benefit from this investment, said Sean Muldoon, chief medical officer, hospital division, Kindred Healthcare. The integration of Siemens CT systems into our practice allows us to continue our goals to better serve our patients and provide high quality care.

Siemens said its SOMATOM Emotion Duo system provides sub-second scanning, a wide range of clinical applications and cost-effectiveness with twice the performance of single slice CTs through its Lightning UFC dual-detector technology.

The first SOMATOM Emotion Duo CT was installed in December, with further deployment planned in Kindred Healthcare facilities across the US.
