The company gave the announcement as it opened its new GSM handset production line in Manaus. GSM is beginning to take off in Latin America, with a third of the market expected to be GSM by 2006. The new factory will initially produce a million GSM handsets a year, scaleable up to 10 million as GSM demand rises.
Siemens aims for Latin American top three
Siemens' Brazilian subsidiary has told the press that it wants to be one of the top three mobile handset manufacturers in Latin America. The company aims to have a quarter of the market by 2005.
