Royal Dutch/Shell Group’s IT arm, Shell Services International (SSI) Tuesday made commercially available its in-house data warehousing software, Kalido, saying it combines elements of both pre-packed and tailored warehousing systems. Kalido is now in version five, and was developed by SSI to be a generic system that could be applied across all of Shell’s operating companies.

SSI says that Kalido has patented features to enable the automation of warehouse building, and that it lets users change dimensional reference data without altering existing transactional data, enabling firms to keep their warehouse up to date more easily. Dr Linda Hickman, SSI’s business development manager, said: Kalido changes as fast as the business does, but does not forget what it changes. She also stressed that Kalido comes with XML embedded.

Kalido has attracted some support within the IT industry. Andersen Consulting will implement the system, while business intelligence firm Informatica Corp is working on tools for the SSI warehouse. Application integration software developer Constellar Corp has said it is working on a Kalido adaptor for its Constellar Hub integration software. SSI will market the warehouse at global businesses including retail, finance and utility vertical when the software is released June 30.
