A new partnership between Shell and PayPal will allow drivers to pay for petrol with their smartphone.

The Shell Motorist app and PayPal apps will enable customers to select the pump they are using before filling up. They will then be automatically charged for the petrol through PayPal.

This foray by Shell into the mobile payments market will allow motorists to pay for petrol without leaving their car, in a bid for greater convenience and flexibility.

The service will see its launch in April, initially only available to Shell Drivers Club members. A nationwide rollout will follow later in 2015.

Mobile payments using the PayPal app are already accepted by restaurants and retailers across the UK. Petrol payments by mobile were trialled successfully by the two companies back in 2013.
