Sir Clive Sinclair’s Shaye Communications Ltd has chosen Motorola Ltd as its partner in bidding for one of the two to four operator licences for the Telepoint public cordless phone system, and have formed a 50-50 venture, Call Point, to make their bid. Shaye has developed the Forum Personal Phone and its base station. Shaye shareholders include Nokia-Mobira Oy, Timex Corp, Fred Olsen Trading, and Sinclair Research.

France has reserved the wavebands and plans to start a pilot cordless telephone service similar to the ones planned for the UK starting early next year – and the idea has found favour with the European Community Commission in Brussels, which sees a European market of 20m or more phones in short order if an international standard is agreed.
