SHARP TO INVEST UP TO $800M IN FLAT PANEL DISPLAY PLANT

By CBR Staff Writer

Sharp Corp says it expects to invest $720m to $800m building a second liquid crystal display plant at its complex in Mie prefecture, central Japan. It will invest $400m in the first phase of the project, which is expected to be ready to start production in October 1998, and an additional $350m to $400m in the second phase. After the completion of the first phase, the new plant will have production capacity equivalent to the first Mie plant, which is expected to produce 250,000 panels per month in the six months to March 31 1998. Details of the second phase, including final production capacity, are not yet decided.
