Sharp Electronics Corp plans to have a 10 colour LCD panel out on the OEM market by the third quarter: using the same active-matrix technology as the monochrome screen on the Mac Portable, it will display 512 colours and support VGA: according to Microbytes Daily, the new thin-film transistor screen backs up each pixel with two transistors, so if one fails another one is there to take its place, and a laser repair system on the line enables defective transistors to be fixed or removed before the display leaves the plant; it has a 120o viewing angle, reportedly offers much improved colour over current colour liquid crystal diode displays, but it draws a daunting 12W and weighs in at a hefty 2 lbs 4oz.
