Under contracts estimated to be worth more than $10 million, Nortel Networks is scheduled to build China’s first optical metro network in Shanghai, based on Nortel Networks OPTera* Metro portfolio.

The contracts also include a city-wide broadband access system; an ADSL (asymmetrical digital subscriber line) solution for high-speed digital service to approximately 200,000 subscribers; and ATM infrastructure to support Internet and video conferencing services for the October APEC conference in Shanghai.

Nortel Networks is delighted to have been chosen to make such a significant contribution to Shanghai’s information infrastructure and to play a key role in fueling China’s economic powerhouse, said Robert Mao, president and CEO, Nortel Networks China. As we work together to bring the speed, quality and reliability of the high-performance Internet to every corner of the city, these contracts signal a new and beneficial era of cooperation between Shanghai Telecom and Nortel Networks.

In addition to OPTera Metro, Nortel Networks solution for Shanghai Telecom includes Nortel Networks Shasta* 5000 Broadband Service Node (BSN) and Nortel Networks Passport* 15000 and Passport 7480 multiservice switches.
