SGS THOMSON UNVEILS MULTIMEDIA PC ON SINGLE CHIP

By CBR Staff Writer

SGS Thomson Microelectronics NV has unveiled a multimedia personal computer on a single chip which it reckons will position the personal computer for totally new applications. The ST PC Consumer chip integrates a high performance microprocessor with the graphics, television-compatible output and video subsystems needed for multimedia applications. Tony Taylor, product marketing manager for SGS Thomson’s Systems Integration and Core Logic business, says the new chip exploits the company’s strengths in 8 wafer fabrication. He says by going for high volume production from the company’s own fabrication plants, Thomson has been able to lower the cost of the new chips to about half the cost of currently available chips needed to implement the same functionality. In large volumes, the ST PC will apparently cost less than $40. It is not being pitched at the mainstream personal computer market, more at the thin client market in specific sectors such as healthcare, education, in- flight entertainment systems, set-top boxes and point of sale terminals. Taylor says there are lots of manufacturers ready to take the chips, and the company’s main task is deciding which customers to support first. There are at least two major names in the frame, but no-one wants to lose competitive edge through exposure, the company said. The chips are available now in sample quantities, and will be in volume production at the beginning of next year. They will be made at the company’s plant in Crolles, France, and also in Phoenix, Arizona.
