SGS-THOMSON MICROELECTRONICS REPORTS PRE-TAX PROFITS OF $2.2M

SGS-Thomson Microelectronics SA reported pre-tax profit before extraordinary items of $2.2m last year, against a loss last time of $131.3m, and turnover grew 26% to $1,090m: although 1989 looks set to be at best a flat year for chipmakers, SGS-Thomson is hopeful of remaining profitable this year.
