Silicon Graphics Inc’s ‘back to basics’ strategy means there’s no reason for it to continue to solder boards when it can get someone else to the job more cheaply and has sold its 270-person Cray printed circuit board operation to Canadian electronics manufacturer Celestica Holdings Corp for an undisclosed amount. The Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin facility and employees will become Celestica staff as the former IBM Corp unit produces circuit boards for SGI’s Cray T90, J90, and T3E supercomputers. SGI’s Chippewa plant will have 1,050 staff after the sell-off. SGI says it’s part of an ongoing outsourcing strategy and that it will continue to do the system integration work.
