Silicon Graphics Inc and Pyramid Systems Inc have agreed to co- market Computer Assisted Virtual Environment (CAVE) systems around the world. SGI says the announcement is part of the Virtual Reality Initiative it announced in July 1998 (CI No 3,457). The CAVE is configured as a room-sized, cube-shaped facility with stereoscopic graphics projected onto every surface. It is designed to help people interact with, visualize and simulate real-world environments so as to solve complex science and engineering problems. SGI and Pyramid say they want to push the CAVE as an appropriate application of high- performance computing (HPC). In their emphasis on high-end, specialist applications for VR, SGI and Pyramid are pulling away from the 3D mainstream. Platinum Technology is using virtual reality modeling language (VRML) software in business data visualization applications such as its recently announced Forest & Trees, while rival Computer Associates has bought a pair of 3D content companies to accelerate the adoption of 3D application interfaces into the enterprise (CI No 3,530).
