The product, to be called Workforce Mail, will run Sendmail’s flagship email server on a box based on SuSE AG’s new Carrier Grade Linux, HP ProLiant server hardware and Intel’s Centrino low-power mobile processors, Sendmail said.
The product will have anti-spam and anti-virus components, as well as content filters to restrict activity to work uses and to prevent sensitive company information being leaked.
The target customers are companies that want to give email access via kiosks or wireless devices to deskless workers, such as store and warehouse workers, nurses, deliverymen, and mobile service staff.
Sendmail chairman Greg Olson said in a statement. Our research shows that extending email to deskless workers allows enterprises to reduce operational costs, improve communications with customers, and increase employee motivation and productivity.
The company will be competing against the usual suspects in the messaging server space – Microsoft Corp and IBM Corp, which lead the market with Exchange and Notes respectively.
