Seiko Epson Corp has developed a 4.8 white liquid crystal display screen which can display colour, using a simple matrix high-quality liquid crystal panel, as distinct from the active matrix liquid panels currently used: the simple matrix technology could hitherto be used only on big screens and not on small ones; the company has also solved the problem of the slow response time of simple matrix mode screens, providing a response equivalent to that of active mode crystals of 0.04 to 0.08 seconds, up from the previous of 0.2 to 0.3 secs; having harnessed the technology to a small screen, Seiko Epson hopes to offer commercial versions within two to three years; Seiko has also been able to provide improved resolution and use of colour on the liquid crystal screens for laptops.
