Torrance, California-based Seiko Epson Corp and Adobe Systems Inc have entered a licensing agreement that enables users of the EPL-7000 laser printer to add PostScript software from Adobe to their printers: Epson will offer an IC card that enables the EPL-7000 to produce Adobe’s PostScript language output; the option requires adding 1Mb of memory through the use of random access memory chips, and the additional memory brings the total system memory to 1.5Mb; by adding chips in increments of 512Kb, the memory board can hold up to 2Mb, and if additional expansion is required for graphics or optional emulations, memory configurations of up to 6Mb can be achieved by combining boards and chips; also, users can upgrade by exchanging the EPL-7000 controller for an Epson EPL-7500 controller, which provides PostScript language output and RISC processing; the card will be available in November at around $700, and the EPL-7000 is $1,400; the EPL-7000 has 14 resident fonts, 512Kb of random access memory and two card slots that facilitate HPGL plotter emulation; in addition, the unit is compatible with the Hewlett-Packard LaserJet Series IIP.
