Charles Nicholls, CEO of Windsor, UK-based SeeWhy, said the software is backed by an active user community and product engineering staff is completely free to use.

The company however fell short of calling its Community Edition an open source product. SeeWhy still maintains control of the source code but adheres to an open business model when it comes to product development by promoting and supporting user and developer communities and sharing open source SeeWhy product templates and configurations.

Nicholls said the product is an ideal starting point for organizations interested in moving to a real-time infrastructure and claimed the software can be installed in less than an hour. He said SeeWhy also offers a free training tutorial to help developers rapidly build and deploy BI applications and has set up an online forum for registered users for online support and knowledge sharing. Optional training course or technical support contracts are also available, but are charged for.

The Community Edition is fully compatible with SeeWhy’s Enterprise Edition for future upgrade.

SeeWhy’s technology differs from most other BI tools in that it allows real-time metrics, alerts, and follow-on actions from event streams, databases, or the network to be embedded directly into business applications.

It can be categorized alongside other BI event stream-processing tools like Progress/Apama and Celequest that analyze streaming data flows in real time.
