Phase one, announced earlier this year, introduced improved scalability and management, using technology brought in from Gauntlet.
Phase two fleshes out Sidewinder’s take on the convergence of perimeter security appliances, which has been the focus of much marketing and R&D spend in the firewall market over the last several months.
The latest appliance tackles security on application protocols such as web, email, instant messaging and FTP, through the use of proxies and third-party filters and will include basic SSL-based virtual private network functionality.
The new appliance can also include URL content filtering from Secure’s own SmartFilter software, anti-virus software from Network Associates Inc and spam filtering software from Cloudmark Inc.
