The concept of the computer store, which caught on only in the early 1980s, has quickly turned sour around the world, and the latest company to scale back its operations is Sears Roebuck & Co, which plans to cut its network of Business Centers to one per city. As a result, 41 of the 100 stores will close, but Sears says there will be no job losses in the consolidation. It has had to follow most of its rivals in setting up a direct sales team to supplement its storefronts.
