Disk drive manufacturer Seagate Technology Inc, which announced the laying off of 1,000 staff in Singapore earlier this month, has confirmed it will shut down its disk media plant in Tuas creating several hundred more job losses. After the closure Seagate will still have three plants in Singapore and two media plants worldwide, one in Woodlands in Singapore and the other in the US.
Both the Tuas and Woodlands plants were opened in 1996, with the Tuas plant belonging to Conner Peripherals which was acquired by Seagate shortly after the plant opened. The Woodlands plant was built by Seagate around the same time.
A Seagate press officer said: Our media operations have become significantly more efficient over the past two years, therefore we don’t need three manufacturing facilities.
