By CBR Staff Writer

Also with disk drives lined up for Comdex is Scotts Valley, California-based Seagate Technology Inc, which has new 2.5, 3.5 and 5.25 models, and says it is working on a new ST7000 family of 1.8 drives. The new 2.5 drives are the ST9144A, ST9144N and ST9052A: the first with AT or SCSI interface, stores 127Mb formatted at $600 in evaluation quantities for either, samples December, volume first quarter. The 42Mb ST9052A is just 0.5 thick and has an AT interface, weighs 4.8 oz and draws under 1W in most applications. Evaluation pricing is $415, same availability as the 127Mb. The 3.5 ST1980N comes with SCSI-2 interface and offers 860Mb formatted. It has 10.5mS average seek time; $1,695 for samples, same schedule as the 2.5s. The Wren 9 – ST42101 – is a 5.25 drive with a fastwide SCSI-2 interface in both single-ended and differential versions for a 20M-byte-per-second external data transfer rate, and stores 2.2Gb unformatted. OEM sample pricing for the ST42101N single-ended SCSI and ST42101ND differential SCSI is planned to be $2,775 and $2,865 respectively, with samples of the first set for first quarter 1992, volume in the second; the other is one quarter further out. Elite 3 ST43400 and ST43401 models have the same capabilities and interfaces but store 3.5Gb unformatted, the ST43200K with IPI-2 interface stores 3.3Gb unformatted. Evaluation and production units for the ST43400 are planned for February 1992, with the ST43401 and ST43200K in April and March, respectively – at $3,395, $3,495 and $3,895 respectively.
