Continuing its programme of buying up small software companies working in fields loosely associated with its core storage business, Seagate Technology Inc has now lighted on Network Computing Inc of Santa Clara, which develops LANalert network management software for NetWare networks. Seagate will pay an undisclosed cash sum for the privately-held company; it gave no figures but expects a $5m to $6m hit against its fiscal third quarter figures to write off in-process research and development. Network Computing’s technical strengths include its expertise in the use of intelligent agents for managing, monitoring and responding to NetWare-based network problems and events, Seagate said.
