The president of United Microelectronics Corp warned last week that the downturn in the Asian semiconductor manufacturing industry could lead to a price war in wafer foundry charges. Quoted in the Taiwanese paper, the Commercial Times, he claimed that the company’s clients had been seeking reductions in foundry charges and that the firm could be forced to make price cuts if its competitors went down that path. However, the senior vice president of Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co Ltd dismissed the claims, saying that Taiwan Semi would instead offer more flexibility in price negotiations.
