SD-Scicon Plc, the company born out of the acquisition by Systems Designers Plc of Scicon Ltd from British Petroleum Plc, has announced that it is to split its UK activities into two separate companies: Scicon Ltd and SD. Based at Wavendon, Milton Keynes, Scicon Ltd will focus on a number of commercial markets by splitting into four divisions; Scicon Energy, Scicon Finance, Scicon Industry and Scicon Networks, while SD, headquartered at Farnborough, Hampshire, will focus on defence, aerospace and government. Both companies will become fully operational by January 1 next year, although the new boards of directors took office with effect from July 1. Staff will naturally be split with 1,250 going to Scicon and about 1,000 going to SD. Scicon is forecasting turnover in the region of UKP50m for its first year of activity in the new form, and SD is hoping to do UKP40m. Today SD-Scicon Plc employs 5,500 people; of these more than 3,000 are employed over here, with some 1,000 or so scattered around the US, France and West Germany.
