Scottish Power Plc has invested UKP35m to lay telephone cables alongside its power cables and formed ScottishTelecom Ltd to bid for non-residential traffic in competition with British Telecommunications Plc and beyond the local call rate, it is offering a single tariff for calls anywhere in Scotland that it says its rivals won’t be able to match; it has retained the National Grid Co’s Energis Ltd to carry its calls south of the border, with a joint launch planned for March; it will use City of London Telecommunications Ltd to put the thriving Edinburgh financial community in close touch with their London counterparts, but does not yet have arrangements outside its service area to cities such as Aberdeen and Dundee served by Scottish Hydro-Electric Plc, but may either use the latter’s network or build one.
