The UK’s third internet exchange is set to open this September in Edinburgh, Scotland, it was announced this week. The Scottish Internet Exchange Ltd, which wishes to be known as ScotiX, has appointed TeleCity Ltd, which already handles the existing hubs in London and Manchester, to manage the co-location facility. The deal follows a tendering process which received bids from seven global firms.

ScotiX is a non-profit organization that was set up this year by, among others, British Telecommunications Plc, the Internet Society Scotland (currently in the process of applying for a Scottish country-code internet domain), cable firms NTL Inc and Telewest Communications Plc, Scottish Telecom Plc and the Royal Bank of Scotland. Its goal is to increase net access speeds, thereby reducing costs, to encourage the growth of e-commerce in Scotland. The firm claims to have the ambition of eventually giving every Scottish town its own e-commerce hub.
