SCO SAYS COMPAQ WILL DO UNIXWARE “FOREVER”

By CBR Staff Writer

Santa Cruz Operation Inc says it met with Compaq Computer Corp executives on Tuesday and secured guarantees that UnixWare will be Compaq’s preferred 32-bit Unix as well as its 64-bit Unix operating system of choice on volume platforms forever. SCO expects that Compaq’s next-generation Digital Unix release, Tru64 Unix, which is to run on Alpha and Intel, will be confined to enterprise and other high-end uses. There’s no suggestion that Siemens Nixdorf Information Systems Inc might be on the CeBit dais with SCO. SNI plumped for Solaris x86 in a Unix-on-Intel beauty contest saying UnixWare was not an option and that SNI wanted a partner with financial stability.
