Scientific-Atlanta Inc, Motorola Inc and Kaleida Labs Inc came together on Sunday to announce that they will jointly develop new technology for the delivery of interactive and multi-media services via cable television networks using Kaleida’s ScriptX software, Motorola PowerPC microprocessors and Scientific-Atlanta terminals, networks and servers. Kaleida is the multimedia software joint venture of Apple Computer Inc and IBM Corp. The Atlanta, Georgia-based Scientific-Atlanta announced last month that it will work with Time Warner Inc and Toshiba Corp to provide digital home terminals and operator equipment to handle interactive services for Time Warner’s trial in 10,000 homes in Orlando, Florida, which is due to start early in 1994, and says that while the new agreement is separate, the resulting technology will be designed for use by any cable company. The dream is to deliver virtual reality down the cable to the home, so subscribers could experince the sensation of touring a shopping mall or trying on clothes without leaving their armchairs.
