Labor union IG Metall said that SBS is planning to cut as many as 1,000 jobs, although SBS spokesperson Joern Roggenbuck said that no numbers had yet been confirmed.

Munich-based SBS, which made an operating loss of 25m euros ($32.6m) in the quarter ending December 31, 2004, has struggled to consistently achieve the levels of profitability of its European IT services peers such as Atos Origin and LogicaCMG.

Last week, Siemens chief Dr Heinrich von Pierer announced plans to cut 1,350 jobs in its loss-making fixed networks division.
