Sanity may rule – a group of satellite operators, broadcasters, manufacturers and regulators signed a memorandum of understanding in Bonn on Friday to bring digital high-definition television to Europe, Reuter reports: They are jointly undertaking to make every effort to provide European digital television and to place it on the market as from 1995, said Wolfgang Boetsch, Germany’s Minister of Posts & Telecommunications, after the signing; the Digital Video Broadcasting Project groups 85 members, including at least one Japanese electronics firm, but the core of firms are from the UK, Germany, France, Italy and the Netherlands; the group includes the European Commission as an observer and the UK Department of Trade and Industry among others; National Transcommunications Ltd, Philips Electronics NV, Thomson SA, Sony Europe, the British Broadcasting Corporation and Grundig AG are also involved; the European Commission is merely an observer and no European hand-outs are demanded.
