SAP has teamed up with the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) to develop CancerLinQ, a solution that is designed to transform care for cancer patients worldwide.
The collaboration brings oncology data and expertise from ASCO, who are a non-profit physician group with over 35,000 members worldwide.
Using the SAP HANA platform, CancerLinQ will, when complete, unlock real-world patient care data from millions of electronic health records and other sources such as clinical trial data.
The first version of CancerLinQ is scheduled for release in late 2015 and will allow patients to be able to see that they are receiving the best quality of care, based on the latest data.
So far, eight oncology practices in the U.S have agreed to provide patient records and it is expected that seven more large cancer centers will soon join. Approximately 500,000 patients will be represented in the first version of CancerLinq.
The Big Data will pull in patient data from many different sources, such as clinical information systems, tumor registries, biobank systems and text documents – physician’s notes, as well as medical history.
SAP HANA is also being utilised by the Dartmouth-Hitchcock health system in an initiative named, GreenCare, which is aimed at improving the patient care experience by allowing physicians to help improve surgical outcomes, address costs and help to avoid unnecessary surgeries.
Dr. Sohail K. Mirza, chair of Orthopedics at Dartmouth-Hitchcock, said: "Almost every physician has certain health information they need, rarely is that information processed and fed back to the patient. Through measurements and very specific data analysis, we’re working with SAP to build it into our care process and make it part of our everyday practice."
