SANYO PLANS BIG PERSONAL COMPUTER PUSH IN EUROPE

By CBR Staff Writer

Watch out for Sanyo Electric Co – inhibited by the rows between the US and Japan over semiconductors, the company is switching the main target of its personal computer sales to Europe from the US. About 70% of the 100,000 machines planned for export this year will come to Europe, and Sanyo is expanding its sales networks in the UK, France and Germany. The machines will be XT alikes and AT-alikes, including ones based on the 80386, and laptops. Sanyo’s overseas sales last year amounted to only 60,000 machines, and its plant in New Jersey has had trouble expanding production, which is currently running at between 2,000 to 3,000 a month.
