SANCTIONS ON JAPANESE ELECTRONIC TYPEWRITER MANUFACTURERS?

By CBR Staff Writer

The European Commission is expected to ask the Council of Ministers to impose punitive sanctions on five Japanese electronic typewriter manufacturers – three of which assemble their lines in the UK – on the grounds that their European plants do no more than final assembly and test from wholly imported subassemblies: the five are Sharp Corp, in Wrexham; Matsushita Electric Industrial Co in Newport, Gwent; Silver Reed Inc in Birmingham; Canon Inc in Brittany, France; and Tokyo Electric in Brunswick, West Germany.
