Samsung top handset manufacturer with 22.1% market share: comScore

Verizon leads mobile operators with 31.1% market share

Samsung was the top handset manufacturer with a market share of 22.1% while Verizon led among mobile operators with 31.1% market share in the US in April 2010, according to data released by comScore.

The firm’s data between January 2010 and April 2010 shows that Samsung was followed by LG with a market share of 21.8%, Motorola with 21.6%, RIM with 8.4% share and Nokia with 8.1% market share.

During the same period, Motorola’s market share was down by 1.3 percentage points to 21.6% from 22.9% between January 2010 and April 2010, while Samsung gained a market share of 1.0 percentage points, RIM gained by 0.6, while Nokia fell by 1.0 percentage points.

Verizon was the leading mobile operator in the US with 31.1% market share of total US mobile subscribers, falling 0.1 percentage points versus the prior period. AT&T gained second spot with 25.2% market share, followed by Sprint and T-Mobile with 12% share, and Tracfone with 5.1% market share.

According to comScore, in an average month during January through April 2010 time period, 64.6% of US mobile subscribers used text messaging on their mobile device, up 1.1 percentage points from three months prior. Browsers were used by 31.1% of US mobile subscribers, up 2.5 percentage points, while subscribers who used downloaded applications made up 29.8%.

In addition, the firm found that 19.9% of mobile subscribers accessed social networking site or blog, an increase of 2.8 percentage points from 17.1% for three months ended April 2010.
