The attractions of the Alpha RISC to Samsung Electronics Co appear to be the rapid advance of Windows NT and Digital Equipment Corp’s forthcoming FX!32 emulator for the Alpha, which enables iAPX-86 Windows applications to run unchanged under NT on t he RISC. Samsung says it is highly likely that its AST Research Inc affiliate will use the Alpha in high-end workstations, although up to now, no Windows personal computer manufacturer has found any success by using a non-iAPX-86 chip. Samsung says it also intends to use Alpha chips in telecommunications products and consumer electronics equipment such as switches, television set-top boxes and multimedia personal computers with television.
