NAND is one of the two types of flash memory used to provide higher storage and faster speeds in USB drives, memory cards, and MP3 players.

Samsung will make the chips from 300-millimeter wafers using advanced 50-nanometer level process technology at the plant in Austin, Texas, said James Chung, a company spokesman as reported by Marketwatch.

The new line is expected to initially produce 20,000 16-gigabit NAND flash chips in a month, which be raised to 60,000 chips by 2008.

Samsung also announced an investment of $2.2 billion to expand its LCD production for 46-inch and 52-inch televisions.
