Samsung takes third place in the mobile phone battle

South Korea's Samsung has become the world's third-largest mobile phone maker. The company claimed the position by overtaking Sony Ericsson, the new joint venture which began in October. However, it still cannot rival Nokia's dominance.

Swedish newspaper Dagen Industri reported that Samsung’s market share had increased to 7.5% in 2001, compared with 5% in 2000. Sony Ericsson’s market share was slightly lower at 7.3%.

Nokia has increased its lead as the world’s largest mobile phone maker. The Finnish company captured 35.6% of the market, an increase of 5% from the previous year. The US’ Motorola remained in second place.
