Samsung Corp is continuing its drive to dominate the global graphics memory market with the launch of a new synchronous graphic RAM (SGRAM) chip which it claims is the fastest in the world. The 32Mb chip has a data transmission rate of 286Mbps/pin. The chip maker says that the chip processes graphics tasks 30% faster than existing SGRAMs.

Samsung is hoping to take a 40% market share with its new chip. The world market for SGRAM is estimated to be worth $1.5bn, rising to $2.5bn next year. SGRAM is typically used in moderate to high-end accelerator cards where performance is important but the very highest resolutions are not required. SGRAM uses several techniques, such as masked writes and block writes, to increase bandwidth for graphics-intensive functions. รก
