Samsung Electronics Co Ltd has upgraded its SmartMedia storage card, releasing a 32Mb version of the consumer portable storage device. Samsung is eyeing the MP3 player market with the new card, which can record up to 60 minutes of audio. It can also store up to 140 1,280 x 1,024 pixel digital camera pictures. The card is a third of the size of a credit card and weighs two grams. With the increasing volume of consumer devices on the market firms such as Sony Corp and Samsung have been developing Flash memory-based devices that combine low power consumption with diminutive size. Samsung intends to introduce a 64Mb version of the card by the fourth quarter 1999.
