Samsung Electronics Co Ltd has released what it claims is the world’s first 3D thin film transistor LCD monitor. The 17-inch display, dubbed the 3D Hyper Monitor, uses a glass plane sandwiched between two LCD sheets to give an illusion of three dimensional depth to images. 3D goggles can also be used to enhance the image further. Samsung expects the monitor to be used for remote viewing applications such as examining radioactive areas as well as flight simulators, videoconferencing and entertainment purposes. However, although the market for such screens is more than doubling in size year-on-year, actual sales are still low. 30,000 units are expected to be sold on the world market this year, with Samsung hoping to shift 11,000 monitors priced at around $8,000 each.
