Samsung tops US mobile handset manufacturers list in May 2011: comScore

Google Android with 38.1% market share led among smartphone platforms

Samsung has become the top handset manufacturer overall in the US mobile market with 24.8% market share in May 2011, according to data released by comScore.

The comScore study, which surveyed more than 30,000 US mobile subscribers, also revealed that Google Android with 38.1% market share led among smartphone platforms.

For the three month average period ending in May, 234 million Americans ages 13 and older used mobile devices, while 76.8 million people owned smartphones during this period, up 11% from the preceding three month period, the report said.

Device manufacturer Samsung was followed by LG with 21.1% share and Motorola with 15.1% share, while apple improved its share to 8.7% (up 1.2 percentage points) and RIM grabs 8.1% of the overall mobile market share.

In the smartphone space, Google Android was followed by Apple with 26.6% of the smartphone market, up 1.4 percentage points, while RIM ranked third with 24.7% share, followed by Microsoft (5.8%) and Palm (2.4%).

Text messaging has become a popular activity in the US with 69.5% of US mobile subscribers using it in May 2011, while 39.8% of subscribers (up 1.5 percentage points) used browsers and 38.6% (up 2.0 percentage points) downloaded applications.

There has been 1.8 percentage points increase in the mobile subscribers accessing social networking sites or blogs to 28.6%.

Game-playing was done by 26.9% of the mobile audience (up 2.3 percentage points), while 18.6% listened to music on their phones, the report said.
