Samsung was the top handset manufacturer with a market share of 24.9% in the US, while Google led among smartphone platforms with 31.2% market share in the US during January 2011, according to data released by comScore.
The firm’s data for three months ending January 2011 shows that Samsung was followed by LG with a market share of 20.8 %, Motorola with 16.5%, RIM with 8.6% share and Apple with 7% market share.
During the same period, except for Samsung and Apple, the other handset manufacturers registered decline in their US market share.
LG market share was down by 0.2 percentage points to 20.8%, Motorola’s market share was down by 1.2 percentage points to 16.5%, and RIM was down by 0.7 percentage points, between August and November 2010.
Google led mobile smartphone platform in the US with 31.2% market share of total US smartphone subscribers, increasing 7.7 percentage points versus the prior period ended.
Meanwhile, RIM dropped to second spot with 30.4% market share, followed by Apple, Microsoft and Palm with 24.7%, 8% and 3.2% market share, respectively.
According to comScore, in an average month during November through January 2011 time period, 68.1% of US mobile subscribers used text messaging on their mobile device. Browsers were used by 37% of US mobile subscribers, while subscribers who used downloaded applications made up 35.3%.
In addition, the firm found that 25.3% of mobile subscribers accessed social networking site or blog, an increase of 1.1 percentage points from 24.2% for three months ended January 2011.
