Samsung to release Google Glass rival in September

Gear Glass to be similar to Google Glass in form.

By Vinod

Samsung may unveil its own version of high-tech glasses as a rival to Google Glass during September’s IFA trade show in Berlin that starts on 5 September, reported Business Korea citing an unnamed Samsung associate.

According to the report, Samsung’s own version of high-tech glass may be equipped with the Tizen OS, which the company uses in its latest Galaxy Gear smartwatches.

Currently, Google Glass and Epson’s Moverio BT-200s, run on Android.

Although complete details are not available, Samsung’s headset will likely help the user answer phone calls, view text messages and run some small-scale apps.

Samsung has earlier filed for a design patent in Korea and later also sought patents for wearable display technology in the United States.

All these facts corroborate that the company is gearing up for the introduction of globally adaptable smart glasses.

While the cost of Samsung’s Gear Glasses is not yet known, Google’s prototype version of Glass currently costs $1,500.
