Samsung secures flexible display patent for foldable smartphones

The device will feature a first electrode layer and dielectric elastomer film.

By CBR Staff Writer

Samsung has secured a patent for flexible display technology in the US which can make way for foldable phones.

The US Patent and Trademark Office granted the patent to Samsung Display, a subsidiary of the South Korean giant.

The design and technology will enable displays to bend and help in making foldable smartphones.

The device will feature a first electrode layer, dielectric elastomer film, and a second electrode disposed on the upper or lower part of the flexible display panel.

A voltage is applied to the both electrodes, forming the first and second electrode layers. It allows the flexible display to bend without pressure applied by the user’s hands.

The flexible display panel includes a flexible substrate, made of a plastic material with heat resistance and durability properties.

It features polyethylene naphthalate (PEN), polycarbonate (PC), polyarylate (PAR), polyether imide (PEI), polyether sulfone (PES), and polyimide (PI).

The patent says the exemplary embodiment of the present invention is not limited thereto, and the flexible display panel 100 could include a flexible substrate made of several materials having flexibility.

Apple recently secured a patent for a smartphone design with a flexible display.

Last October, Samsung filed a patent application for an IoT glass type wearable that could rival Google’s smart glasses.

The wearable allows users to not only experience what Google Glasses do, but also to interact with, for example, 3D images in mid-air, dial phone numbers, send SMSs, and play virtual piano keyboards.
