Samsung planning to develop plastic displays for smartphones

Samsung is in final stage of development of flexible displays for mobile devices that are anticipated for release during the first half (H1) of 2013

South Korea based Samsung is planning to begin mass production of flexible displays made from plastic rather than glass, a move that would result in mobile devices that are unbreakable, lighter and bendable.

Samsung Display, the display unit of South Korean firm is in final stage of development of flexible displays for mobile devices that are anticipated for release during the first half (H1) of 2013.

The Wall Street Journal reported that the new technology could also offer Samsung with low manufacturing costs, while assisting in varying its products from other rivals including Apple.

Samsung revealed that few customers are currently testing the new displays, while had not speculated the launch of products with flexible displays.

Incorporating organic light emitting diode (OLED) technology, the screens will benefit from enhanced brightness, improved refresh rate and thin body, while can be integrated into several flexible materials including plastic or metal foil.

Other rivals including Nokia, Sony and LG Display are also involved in manufacturing flexible OLED displays as of Samsung’s.
