Samsung overtakes Apple to take US mobile marketshare crown

The number of smartphone users in the US have increased 6% to 121.3 million people in the US since July until the end of October

South Korean electronics firm Samsung has overtaken iPhone maker Apple in its domestic bastion becoming the top handset manufacturer with an overall 26.3% market share, according to a new report.

Samsung’s mobile subscribers increased 0.7% points during three months ending October 2012, leaving iPhone maker in the second spot for the first time in its home market.

According to data from the comScore MobiLens service, Samsung had 26.3% market share, followed by Apple with 17.8%, LG with 17.6%, 11% secured by Motorola and HTC has 6% share during the quarter.

The data also revealed that the number of smartphone users in the US have increased 6% to 121.3 million since July until the end of October.

Google’s Android OS lead the smartphone platforms, with 53.6% of smartphone subscribers, while Apple had 34.3% subscribers followed by RIM with 7.8% share, Microsoft had 3.2% share and Symbian with 0.6% market share.

In October 2012, about 75.9% of the US mobile subscribers used text messaging on their mobile device, nearly 54.5% used downloaded applications, while 52.7% used browsers during the period.

The report revealed that about 39.4% of mobile subscribers accessed social networking sites or blogs, while 34.1% used their mobiles to play games and 28.7% listened to music on their phones.
