Amsec will pay an undisclosed amount to acquire Maryland-based EMA, which provides a range of IT and engineering services to three federal defense agencies including the US Navy, Air Force and Marine Corps.

The privately held company provides network security services, geographic information systems, ERP, data warehousing, systems administration, document management, and product lifecycle management services. It employs some 1,000 people and in its most recent year made revenue of $110 million.

SAIC said that the company would be pooled in its Amsec venture, which is based in Virginia Beach, Virginia, and was formed in June 1999 following a business partnership between SAIC and Northrop Grumman Newport News.

The company focuses on US Navy and Marine Corp clients, and has grown to employ 3,000 people and generate revenue of $225 million.

The division provides engineering and IT services for shipbuilding and electrical systems as well as communications, combat systems and logistics services.

Like its peers (CSC [CSC], Lockheed Martin [LMT], Northrop Grumman, and Perot Systems [PER]), SAIC has been aggressively expanding in the US defense sector in 2003.

This deal represents its third acquisition having snapped up mid-sized players Scientech Inc and VGS Inc earlier in the year.

However, these deals have been dwarfed by a trio of billion-dollar mergers in the past 12 months, between: CSC and DynCorp, General Dynamics [GD] and Veridian, and Lockheed Martin and Titan [TTN].
