The new software is based on Saflink’s NetSign CAC smart card middleware, which is designed for use with Microsoft Windows Mobile 5.0 for Pocket PCs. In creating the combined product, the two companies aim to target the public sector’s identity protection and management initiatives for mobile devices.

The rising use of mobile devices in the government is driving the need to extend network security for mobile device users, said Jeff Affuso, president of the Public Sector Division of Saflink.

Joining forces with Microsoft to leverage our experience with the Department of Defense and other government entities will allow us to deliver an integrated security platform for mobile devices that is easy to use and offers the strongest form of authentication available today.

The two companies have also partnered on a previous project to solicit interest in a privatized version of the Registered Traveler program, an initiative spearheaded by the Transportation Security Administration in an attempt to make airport security checkpoints more convenient for frequent travelers.
