Sacody Technologies Inc of New York has come up with a compression technique that enables 5,000 mugshots to be squeezed onto a 30Mb Winchester on a personal computer: the compressed data can be sent from a Sacody terminal to the security guard in six seconds over a local area network or 15 seconds over a phone line, enabling the guard to check if the employee has an authorised identification card and not a forged one; the stored photos come with authorised signatures too and are called up by the guard on a 3 display; sounds as if it would be a lot better than mugshot books for local police forces.
